Social media shopping – what does it mean for marketers?

It has been revealed today that Instagram will soon be introducing a ‘Shop Now’ button below promotional images which will enable users to make purchases directly within the app.

While marketers have unashamedly jumped on the Instagram bandwagon, sharing beautiful product images all day long, this new development will make the view to purchase process that much faster, minimising the effort a consumer has to put in to track down the item online and reducing the time they have to potentially change their mind,

But will it work? The team behind Pinterest certainly seem to think so as they, too, will be adding a ‘buy’ button to pinned images soon.

The temptation to purchase across these sites may soon spiral out of control…

So, if you’re a marketer, you may want to up your photography budget and start thinking about new, creative ways to display your wares. Those standard studio product shots for your e-commerce site just aren’t going to cut it anymore, it seems.
